Two Ten Jack

Nashville, Tennessee

Photo: Vincent V.

A Japanese izakaya in East Nashville that's dark, moody, and completely transportive. The ramen is excellent — rich tonkotsu broth that simmers for hours — but the small plates are where the kitchen shines. Yakitori skewers over binchotan charcoal, okonomiyaki, and a sake list that rewards exploration. It's the restaurant East Nashville didn't know it needed.

Insider tip

Sit at the bar overlooking the open kitchen. Order the chicken yakitori and the tonkotsu ramen. Finish with a cold sake.

Prince's Hot Chicken Shack

The place that started it all. Prince's has been serving Nashville hot chicken since the 1940s, and everything else in town is a footnote. The heat levels are real — medium here would be extra-hot anywhere else. The room is no-frills, the wait can be long, and none of that matters once you bite in. This is ground zero.

Audrey

Sean Brock's love letter to Southern Appalachian cooking, served in a converted house with a garden out back that supplies half the menu. This isn't nostalgia food — it's painstaking research into heirloom ingredients and forgotten techniques, plated with a precision that makes every course feel like a thesis defense. The tasting menu is the move.

The Hermitage Hotel

The Hermitage Hotel

Nashville's only Beaux-Arts hotel, open since 1910 and still the most elegant room in the city. The lobby ceiling alone is worth a visit — barrel-vaulted stained glass that makes you stand a little straighter. The rooms have been updated without losing the gravitas. The men's restroom downstairs won an award. No, really.

Di An Di

A Vietnamese restaurant in Greenpoint that treats pho like a religion and the dining room like a greenhouse. The space is all exposed brick and trailing plants, and the food has a precision that elevates every bowl without losing the soul of the cooking. The brunch crowd is real, but dinner is where the kitchen stretches.

Avec

A tiny, loud, communal-table Mediterranean spot that's been one of the best restaurants in Chicago since 2003. The wood-oven is the engine — everything that comes out of it tastes like smoke and intention. The room is narrow, the seats are tight, and nobody cares because the food is that good. Paul Kahan's most soulful restaurant.
