Uncommon Objects

Austin, Texas

Photo: Uncommon Objects

A sprawling antique and curiosity shop on South Congress that's been a treasure hunt since 1991. Twenty-plus dealers share the space, and the inventory is wonderfully chaotic — vintage taxidermy next to mid-century lamps next to old Austin concert posters next to things you can't identify but suddenly need. You will leave with something you didn't plan to buy.

Insider tip

The back room with the vintage photography and old Texas maps. Budget an hour minimum.

Houndstooth Coffee

Skip the line at whatever everyone's posting about this week. Houndstooth has been quietly doing single-origin pour-overs better than anyone in the city for over a decade. The West Campus location has this perfect mid-morning light that makes you want to stay for a second cup.

Tyson Cole's flagship is still the best meal in Austin, full stop. This isn't a sushi restaurant — it's a Japanese farmhouse that happens to serve the most inventive raw fish in the Southwest. The omakase is worth every dollar, but honestly the à la carte hot tastings are where the kitchen really shows off.

Hotel Saint Cecilia

Named after the patron saint of music and poetry, and it earns both. This is a 14-room estate hidden behind a wall of bamboo on South Congress. No lobby, no check-in desk, no corporate anything. Just a pool, a record collection, and the distinct feeling that you're staying at a very cool friend's house.

Wanderlust Creamery

An ice cream shop that treats flavors like a passport. Ube malted crunch, Japanese black sesame, mango sticky rice, pandan — every scoop reflects a cuisine and a culture. Adrienne Borlongan draws on her Filipino heritage and global travels, and the result is ice cream that tells a story. It's the best scoop in a city that takes dessert seriously.

Ada's Technical Books and Café

A bookshop-café hybrid that caters to the scientifically curious and the deeply nerdy. The shelves are stacked with coding manuals, design monographs, speculative fiction, and the kind of obscure technical texts you didn't know you needed. The café serves solid espresso and the Wi-Fi is fast. It's a love letter to Seattle's tech culture without the venture-capital energy.
