The Contemporary Austin — Laguna Gloria

Austin, Texas

Photo: The Contemporary Austin - Laguna Gloria

An outdoor sculpture park on the shores of Lake Austin, set on the grounds of a 1916 Italianate villa. The permanent collection lives among old-growth trees and lake views, and the temporary installations are consistently some of the most interesting art you'll see in Texas. It's a museum that feels like a walk in the woods.

Insider tip

The Betty and Edward Marcus Sculpture Park trail. Give yourself an hour and follow the path all the way to the lake.

Houndstooth Coffee

Skip the line at whatever everyone's posting about this week. Houndstooth has been quietly doing single-origin pour-overs better than anyone in the city for over a decade. The West Campus location has this perfect mid-morning light that makes you want to stay for a second cup.

Tyson Cole's flagship is still the best meal in Austin, full stop. This isn't a sushi restaurant — it's a Japanese farmhouse that happens to serve the most inventive raw fish in the Southwest. The omakase is worth every dollar, but honestly the à la carte hot tastings are where the kitchen really shows off.

Hotel Saint Cecilia

Named after the patron saint of music and poetry, and it earns both. This is a 14-room estate hidden behind a wall of bamboo on South Congress. No lobby, no check-in desk, no corporate anything. Just a pool, a record collection, and the distinct feeling that you're staying at a very cool friend's house.

Red Rocks Amphitheatre

You already know about Red Rocks. But knowing about it and standing inside it at dusk while the sky turns violet behind the stage are two completely different things. This 9,525-seat amphitheatre carved into 300-million-year-old sandstone is not just Denver's greatest venue — it might be the greatest outdoor music venue on Earth. No hyperbole.

The Neon Museum

An outdoor 'boneyard' of salvaged Vegas signs — the Stardust, the Sahara, the Moulin Rouge — restored or left to age, depending. Walking tours after dark, when select pieces are re-lit, are the best way to see the collection. It's the closest thing the city has to a memorial of itself.
