Congress Avenue Bridge Bats

Austin, Texas

Photo: Mano C

Every evening from March to October, 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from under the Congress Avenue Bridge in a dark, swirling cloud that takes your breath away. It's one of the largest urban bat colonies in the world, and watching them stream out against a sunset sky is the most Austin thing you can do that costs nothing.

Insider tip

Stand on the southeast side of the bridge, facing east, about 20 minutes before sunset. The bats fly east.

Houndstooth Coffee

Skip the line at whatever everyone's posting about this week. Houndstooth has been quietly doing single-origin pour-overs better than anyone in the city for over a decade. The West Campus location has this perfect mid-morning light that makes you want to stay for a second cup.

Tyson Cole's flagship is still the best meal in Austin, full stop. This isn't a sushi restaurant — it's a Japanese farmhouse that happens to serve the most inventive raw fish in the Southwest. The omakase is worth every dollar, but honestly the à la carte hot tastings are where the kitchen really shows off.

Hotel Saint Cecilia

Named after the patron saint of music and poetry, and it earns both. This is a 14-room estate hidden behind a wall of bamboo on South Congress. No lobby, no check-in desk, no corporate anything. Just a pool, a record collection, and the distinct feeling that you're staying at a very cool friend's house.

Cheekwood Estate & Gardens

A 55-acre botanical garden and art museum built on the grounds of a 1930s Georgian mansion. The gardens are gorgeous year-round — the spring tulip display is Nashville's version of cherry blossom season. The mansion houses a small but strong American art collection, and the sculpture trail through the woods is meditative in a way the city rarely offers.

Empty Bottle

Chicago's most important independent music venue, full stop. The room is small, the sound is excellent, and the booking consistently surfaces bands six months before they blow up. The bar is cheap, the crowd is there for the music, and the energy on a packed Wednesday night rivals any arena show. If you care about live music, this is your church.
