Broken Spoke

Austin, Texas

Photo: Trevor Bush

The last true Texas honky-tonk in Austin. It's been here since 1964, and the developers circling the lot only make it feel more essential. The dance floor is warped, the chicken-fried steak is enormous, and on any given Tuesday you might two-step next to a 75-year-old who's been coming here since opening night. This is sacred ground.

Insider tip

Wednesday and Saturday night live music. Learn the two-step before you go, or learn it on the floor. Nobody judges.

Skip the line at whatever everyone's posting about this week. Houndstooth has been quietly doing single-origin pour-overs better than anyone in the city for over a decade. The West Campus location has this perfect mid-morning light that makes you want to stay for a second cup.

Tyson Cole's flagship is still the best meal in Austin, full stop. This isn't a sushi restaurant — it's a Japanese farmhouse that happens to serve the most inventive raw fish in the Southwest. The omakase is worth every dollar, but honestly the à la carte hot tastings are where the kitchen really shows off.

Hotel Saint Cecilia

Named after the patron saint of music and poetry, and it earns both. This is a 14-room estate hidden behind a wall of bamboo on South Congress. No lobby, no check-in desk, no corporate anything. Just a pool, a record collection, and the distinct feeling that you're staying at a very cool friend's house.

Wynwood Walls

The outdoor museum that turned a warehouse district into a global art destination. The murals are curated and rotate with fresh commissions, featuring heavy hitters like Shepard Fairey and Os Gemeos alongside emerging artists. Yes, it's on every tourist list. It earned its place there. The art is genuinely world-class, and the surrounding streets have spawned an entire neighborhood of galleries.

Mississippi Studios

A 200-capacity music venue in a converted church on Mississippi Avenue. The sound is pristine, the sightlines are intimate, and the booking leans toward the kind of acts that are about to break or already should have. This is the room where Portland's music culture lives — up close, a little loud, and always worth checking the calendar.
