Shelby Bottoms Greenway

Nashville, Tennessee

Photo: james stewart

A 960-acre nature area along the Cumberland River, connected by paved and unpaved trails that make you forget you're minutes from downtown. Herons wade in the wetlands, deer graze at dusk, and the pedestrian bridge connecting it to East Nashville is one of the best urban walks in the South. This is Nashville's backyard, and it's spectacularly uncommercial.

Insider tip

Enter from the Shelby Avenue pedestrian bridge at golden hour. Bike the five-mile loop to Lockeland Springs and back.

Prince's Hot Chicken Shack

The place that started it all. Prince's has been serving Nashville hot chicken since the 1940s, and everything else in town is a footnote. The heat levels are real — medium here would be extra-hot anywhere else. The room is no-frills, the wait can be long, and none of that matters once you bite in. This is ground zero.

Audrey

Sean Brock's love letter to Southern Appalachian cooking, served in a converted house with a garden out back that supplies half the menu. This isn't nostalgia food — it's painstaking research into heirloom ingredients and forgotten techniques, plated with a precision that makes every course feel like a thesis defense. The tasting menu is the move.

The Hermitage Hotel

The Hermitage Hotel

Nashville's only Beaux-Arts hotel, open since 1910 and still the most elegant room in the city. The lobby ceiling alone is worth a visit — barrel-vaulted stained glass that makes you stand a little straighter. The rooms have been updated without losing the gravitas. The men's restroom downstairs won an award. No, really.

Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park

At the southern tip of Key Biscayne, a state park with a lighthouse, an undeveloped beach, and some of the clearest water you'll find in mainland Florida. The beach is consistently rated among the best in the country, and it's blissfully uncrowded compared to South Beach. The lighthouse dates to 1825 and the climb to the top offers views that stretch to the horizon.

Portland Art Museum

The oldest art museum in the Pacific Northwest, with a permanent collection that spans Native American art, Impressionism, contemporary photography, and a robust Asian art wing. The building itself is a graceful blend of historic and modern galleries. It's criminally under-visited by tourists, who somehow always end up at the Saturday Market instead.
