Zia Records

Las Vegas, Nevada

Photo: Gabriel Gap

A Maryland Parkway record store that's been serving Vegas music nerds since 1980. Vinyl, CDs, used inventory deep enough to dig in, and a staff that knows the catalog. The Sahara location is bigger; the Maryland location is the spiritual home — close enough to UNLV that it's still where the city's serious record collectors come.

Insider tip

Browse the used vinyl bins — that's where the finds are. Ask the staff what just came in.

Lotus of Siam

Lotus of Siam

The Northern Thai restaurant that put Vegas dining on the serious-food map decades before the city had a serious-food map. Saipin Chutima's khao soi, drunken noodles, and crispy beef are the kind of dishes that travel writers fly in to eat. The Sahara location is a strip-mall room with no business looking this unassuming and serving food this important.

Raku
EatChinatown

Raku

The late-night Japanese izakaya every Vegas chef goes to after their own shift ends. Mitsuo Endo's small, focused menu of robata-grilled meats, agedashi tofu, homemade tofu, and seasonal sashimi is built on Tokyo-trained technique and ingredients flown in from Japan. The room is tiny, the wait is long, and the meal is one of the city's most quietly important dining experiences.

Esther's Kitchen

Esther's Kitchen

James Trees's Italian restaurant put the Arts District on the dining map and never gave back the spotlight. Hand-rolled pasta, wood-fired pizza, and a bread program serious enough to stand on its own — all served in a room that feels worn-in despite being relatively new. Reservations are essential. So is the bread basket.

ShopGeorgetown · Seattle, Washington

Georgetown Records

A vinyl-only record shop in an industrial pocket of Georgetown that feels like a time capsule. The bins are deep and well-organized, the prices are fair, and the staff has the kind of knowledge that makes Discogs feel impersonal. The emphasis is on punk, indie, metal, and Pacific Northwest music, but the jazz and soul sections are worth digging through too.

ShopMission District · San Francisco, California

Gravel & Gold

A tiny shop on 21st Street that blends handmade clothing, small-press art books, ceramics, and oddities into a collection that feels like browsing someone's impossibly cool apartment. Everything is made by independent artists and small producers, and the rotating gallery in the back adds a layer of discovery that makes every visit feel different.
