Wynn Las Vegas

Las Vegas, Nevada

Steve Wynn's masterpiece on the north Strip remains the gold standard for Vegas luxury — vast, immaculately maintained, and home to a restaurant program that's still arguably the city's best. The pool deck is one of the few on the Strip that feels like a destination on its own. Rooms are large, beds are great, and the staff knows the difference between attentive and obsequious.

Insider tip

Book a Tower Suite if you can. Eat at SW Steakhouse and Lakeside at least once each. Walk through the conservatory at night.

Lotus of Siam

Lotus of Siam

The Northern Thai restaurant that put Vegas dining on the serious-food map decades before the city had a serious-food map. Saipin Chutima's khao soi, drunken noodles, and crispy beef are the kind of dishes that travel writers fly in to eat. The Sahara location is a strip-mall room with no business looking this unassuming and serving food this important.

Raku
EatChinatown

Raku

The late-night Japanese izakaya every Vegas chef goes to after their own shift ends. Mitsuo Endo's small, focused menu of robata-grilled meats, agedashi tofu, homemade tofu, and seasonal sashimi is built on Tokyo-trained technique and ingredients flown in from Japan. The room is tiny, the wait is long, and the meal is one of the city's most quietly important dining experiences.

Esther's Kitchen

Esther's Kitchen

James Trees's Italian restaurant put the Arts District on the dining map and never gave back the spotlight. Hand-rolled pasta, wood-fired pizza, and a bread program serious enough to stand on its own — all served in a room that feels worn-in despite being relatively new. Reservations are essential. So is the bread basket.

StayAlberta Arts District · Portland, Oregon

McMenamins Kennedy School

A former elementary school converted into a hotel, brewery, movie theater, and soaking pool complex. You sleep in old classrooms, drink beer in the former boiler room, and watch movies in the auditorium. It sounds absurd because it is — and it's one of the most purely Portland experiences you can have. Every hallway is painted with murals, and the grounds feel like a slightly surreal summer camp for adults.

StayLoDo · Denver, Colorado

The Crawford Hotel

Built into the top floors of Union Station, sleeping here means waking up in one of the most beautiful buildings in Colorado. The rooms range from classic Pullman sleeper-car style to loft suites with exposed brick and soaring ceilings. You're steps from the best bars and restaurants in LoDo, and the Great Hall downstairs is your de facto living room.
