Forty-five minutes from the Strip and you're in alpine forest at 8,000 feet — bristlecone pines, snow in winter, 30 degrees cooler than the city in summer. The hikes range from family-easy meadow walks to brutal day climbs to the 11,918-foot summit. Most Vegas locals know about it; most visitors never do.
Insider tip
Drive up in summer when the desert hits 110. The Cathedral Rock trail (3 miles round-trip) is the introduction; Mary Jane Falls is the day hike.
