Theaster Gates turned an abandoned 1923 bank on the South Side into one of the most important cultural spaces in America. It's part gallery, part archive, part community center — housing collections of Ebony and Jet magazine, a vinyl library, and rotating exhibitions. The building itself is the primary artwork: soaring ceilings, marble columns, and the weight of intentional reclamation.
Insider tip
Visit during an open house or exhibition opening. The listening room with the vinyl collection is transcendent — ask to spend time in it.
