Sawada Coffee

Chicago, Illinois

Photo: Elaine Slansky

The West Loop coffee bar from latte-art world champion Hiroshi Sawada — and yes, the latte art is genuinely the best in Chicago. The drinks are equally serious: military latte (espresso, matcha, cocoa), the Sawada Espresso Tonic, single-origin pour-overs. A small bar tucked into a larger space, but worth seeking out.

Insider tip

Order the Military Latte and watch them pour it. The matcha–cocoa–espresso combination is way better than it sounds.

Alinea

Grant Achatz's three-Michelin-star temple of molecular gastronomy is still the most ambitious restaurant in America. Every course is a provocation — edible balloons, desserts painted directly on the table, flavors you didn't know existed. It's not dinner. It's a performance that happens to involve food, and it will rearrange your understanding of what a restaurant can be.

Joe's Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab

Not the flashiest name, not the trendiest address, but the stone crab claws flown in from Miami are the real deal and the prime rib is as good as any steakhouse charging twice the price. The dining room has that old-money Chicago energy — white tablecloths, professional service, martinis that arrive cold and correct. A power-lunch institution that earns its reputation nightly.

The Robey
StayWicker Park

The Robey

A boutique hotel built into the iconic Coyote Building at the six corners of Wicker Park. The art deco bones are stunning, the rooms are compact but clever, and the rooftop bar — Cabana Club in summer, Up Room year-round — delivers one of the best skyline views in the city. You're steps from the best eating and drinking in Chicago.

Coava Coffee Roasters

Housed in a shared space with bamboo bike frame builders — which tells you everything about the Portland-ness of it all. Coava roasts light and precise, focusing on single-origin coffees that highlight distinct flavor profiles. The flagship on Hawthorne is airy and industrial, with a massive Probat roaster you can watch in action. Some of the cleanest, most transparent coffee in the city.

CoffeeSouth Broadway · Denver, Colorado

Little Owl Coffee

A tiny, immaculate cafe on South Broadway where every drink is prepared with the focus of a watchmaker. The espresso is pulled on a gorgeous Slayer machine, the latte art is genuinely beautiful, and the pastry case — stocked by local bakers — is curated with real taste. It's small enough that you feel like a regular by your second visit.
