606 Trail

Chicago, Illinois

Photo: Jim Watkins

An elevated rail trail that runs 2.7 miles from Bucktown to Humboldt Park, converting an abandoned rail line into one of the best urban walks in the Midwest. You're above street level the whole way — eye-level with second-floor apartments, treetops, and murals. It's Chicago's answer to the High Line, but quieter, longer, and flanked by real neighborhoods instead of luxury condos.

Insider tip

Enter at the Walsh Park trailhead in Bucktown and walk west toward Humboldt Park. The sunset from the Humboldt Park end is spectacular.

Alinea

Grant Achatz's three-Michelin-star temple of molecular gastronomy is still the most ambitious restaurant in America. Every course is a provocation — edible balloons, desserts painted directly on the table, flavors you didn't know existed. It's not dinner. It's a performance that happens to involve food, and it will rearrange your understanding of what a restaurant can be.

Joe's Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab

Not the flashiest name, not the trendiest address, but the stone crab claws flown in from Miami are the real deal and the prime rib is as good as any steakhouse charging twice the price. The dining room has that old-money Chicago energy — white tablecloths, professional service, martinis that arrive cold and correct. A power-lunch institution that earns its reputation nightly.

The Robey
StayWicker Park

The Robey

A boutique hotel built into the iconic Coyote Building at the six corners of Wicker Park. The art deco bones are stunning, the rooms are compact but clever, and the rooftop bar — Cabana Club in summer, Up Room year-round — delivers one of the best skyline views in the city. You're steps from the best eating and drinking in Chicago.

Red Rocks Amphitheatre

You already know about Red Rocks. But knowing about it and standing inside it at dusk while the sky turns violet behind the stage are two completely different things. This 9,525-seat amphitheatre carved into 300-million-year-old sandstone is not just Denver's greatest venue — it might be the greatest outdoor music venue on Earth. No hyperbole.

The Neon Museum

An outdoor 'boneyard' of salvaged Vegas signs — the Stardust, the Sahara, the Moulin Rouge — restored or left to age, depending. Walking tours after dark, when select pieces are re-lit, are the best way to see the collection. It's the closest thing the city has to a memorial of itself.
